The incubation period of primary pneumonic plague is 1 to 3 days and is characterized by development of an overwhelming pneumonia with high fever, cough, bloody sputum, and chills. For plague pneumonia patients, the death rate is over 50%.
Pneumonic plague, on the other hand, is one of the most deadly infectious diseases; patients can die 24 hours after infection. The mortality rate depends on how soon treatment is started, but is always very high.

The authors name it haemorrhagic plague to distinguish it clearly from bubonic plague. (...) What then was the causative agent of haemorrhagic plague? Scott and Duncan suggest that it may have been a form of filovirus, distantly related to Ebola.
